Why Orchard Walks Matter

Walking through apple orchards isn't just about getting exercise. It's genuinely different from regular trails. You're surrounded by quiet beauty — the scent of ripening fruit, dappled shade under the canopy, and a sense of genuine peace that's hard to find elsewhere.

Near Anykščiai, we've discovered three routes that work particularly well for people looking for a slower pace. They're not too demanding, they've got proper rest spots, and they're accessible year-round. Each one takes roughly an hour, so you're not overcommitting your day.

Šaltinėlis Loop — The Gentle Route

This is the easiest of the three. The path follows an old farm lane that's been maintained for decades. It's roughly 3.5 kilometers, mostly flat with just a couple of gentle slopes. You'll walk past heritage apple varieties — the trees here are older, which means they're tall enough to create proper shade.

Distance: 3.5 km
Duration: 55–65 minutes
Rest spots: 3 benches
02

Medvėgalis Ridge — The Scenic Route

This one has slightly more character. You're walking along a gentle ridge that gives you views across the valley. The path's about 4.2 kilometers and does have one moderate uphill section near the start — nothing steep, but you'll notice it. The payoff is worth it though. Once you're up there, you can see across several orchards, and on clear days you'll spot the treeline beyond Anykščiai.

Distance: 4.2 km
Duration: 70–75 minutes
Rest spots: 2 benches + viewpoint
03

Varnėnai Circuit — The Extended Route

The longest of the three, but don't let that put you off. It's 5.1 kilometers and combines bits of both previous routes. You're walking through different orchard zones — older heritage trees, then younger commercial plantings. The variety keeps it interesting. There's a small spring halfway through where locals refill water bottles, and a proper picnic area near the three-kilometer mark.

Distance: 5.1 km
Duration: 90–100 minutes
Rest spots: Picnic area + benches

Practical Tips That Actually Help

We've walked these routes dozens of times, and we've picked up a few things that make the experience genuinely better. It's not rocket science, but it matters.

Timing Your Visit

Early morning is best — you'll have the paths mostly to yourself, and it's cooler. Aim for 7 or 8 a.m. if you can. The orchards are quietest then, and the light's actually prettier. Late afternoon works too, but you'll run into more farm vehicles and maintenance work.

What to Bring

A small backpack with water is essential — even though you're only out for an hour, you'll want to stay hydrated. We bring 500ml minimum. Sun protection matters too. Even though you're in shade most of the time, there are open sections, especially on the Medvėgalis route. Wear a hat. Comfortable shoes with decent grip are important because the paths can be muddy after rain.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring (May–June) is magical — the trees are in blossom and everything's green. Summer's warm but can feel heavy in July. Autumn (September–October) is probably the best time — the fruit's ripening, the air's crisp, and it's not too hot. Winter's accessible but muddy. The paths don't ice over usually, but ground conditions can be unpredictable.

Before You Go

Choose activities that match your fitness level, check local conditions before travelling, and speak with your GP if you have health concerns before starting a new activity. Weather can change quickly in the countryside, so always bring appropriate clothing. These routes are maintained regularly but conditions vary seasonally.

Get Out There

The best walk is the one you'll actually do. All three of these routes are genuinely accessible. They're not about proving anything — they're about spending an hour in a place that's genuinely peaceful and beautiful. Pick the one that appeals to you, grab some water, and go. You'll understand why people keep coming back to these orchards.

And here's the thing — once you've done one route, you'll probably want to try the others. They're different enough that they don't feel repetitive, but familiar enough that you'll notice new details each time you visit.
